Does the Universe Need Imperfection?
Every once in a while, I come across an idea that doesn’t necessarily convince me, but refuses to leave me alone.
Recently, I encountered the idea that the universe may begin with the slightest imbalance—a tiny asymmetry. One version described it as a +⅔ / –⅓ tilt, a subtle unevenness that prevents reality from settling into perfect equilibrium.
Whether those exact numbers have any physical significance isn’t really what captured my attention. It was more the principle behind them.
The suggestion that perhaps existence itself requires a slight imperfection. Because if everything were perfectly balanced... Would anything happen at all? Who is to say? We tend to imagine perfection as complete symmetry. Complete stillness. Complete equilibrium. Yet when you look around, almost everything alive seems to exist because equilibrium is constantly being approached but never fully reached.
A heart beats because it oscillates. Breathing exists because of alternating pressure. Weather forms because temperatures differ. Rivers flow because of differences in elevation. Electricity moves because of differences in potential. Stars shine because gravity and outward pressure never quite cancel one another.
Even life itself depends on gradients. Without difference, there is no movement. Without imbalance, there is no becoming. This made me wonder whether we have misunderstood what order looks like. It seems order isn’t the absence of chaos but that order emerges because chaos never completely “wins”.
Likewise, chaos doesn’t eliminate order. The two seem to dance around one another. One continually giving rise to the other. When physicists describe the early universe, they often point to tiny fluctuations in what otherwise appears remarkably uniform.
If matter and antimatter had been created in exactly equal amounts, they would have annihilated one another almost completely. Yet for reasons that remain an active area of research, there appears to have been a very slight excess of matter. That tiny asymmetry is part of why galaxies, stars, planets (and ultimately us) exist at all.
A small difference with extraordinary consequences.
